The 3 Real Reasons Your Projects Aren't Done

Apologies in advance, my friends, but this week's post will be a little more blunt than what you're used to getting here. I want to think most of my posts are conversational and collaborative; today, I'm going to give it to you straight and tell you exactly why your home projects are done. Even with the best of intentions, there is a reason you still need to get that list of projects done, or even started. I know you have a list, either in your head or written down on a Post-it, of all the home improvements you want to make but have yet to. It might be "paint the living room," "furnish our bedroom," "remodel the bathroom," or anything in between. No matter how little or big your project is, it hasn't gotten done, and I will tell you why. Spoiler alert: it's not about spending money.

Time

No matter how skilled you are at time management, planning, and scheduling, you never come across a block of time to tackle your project. I know this because I've been there (lots of times) and it goes something like this:

This weekend, I'm going to do XYZ. The weekend rolls around, and ABC and 123 pop up, and there goes the time I was going to spend on XYZ.

It's a cycle that repeats itself over and over because life is busy! We can't plan for and anticipate all the things that come up! And even when we find a sliver of time, doesn't it feel great to do nothing sometimes? Don't fill every moment with the have-to-do's.

Decision Fatigue

We've talked about this before, but decision fatigue is real, and it's no surprise considering how much input we take in daily. Have you ever been super excited to start a project, ready to finally dive in and make your vision a reality, only to hit a wall at the first step because, daaaaang, there are just too many options? Maybe you're shopping for a rug or selecting a paint color, only to realize that having so many options is' helping but hurting your ability to make a decision. Then, what happens next is overload, too many ideas, considerations, reviews, and options, causing your brain to explode and bringing the project train to a screeching halt. If this sounds familiar, then you've suffered decision fatigue and are probably dreading jumping back into the decision pool.

Desire

In today's DIY culture, it's easy to feel like we should be able to tackle all our projects ourselves, and even enjoy it! Look at how fun and easy it is! Right? Well, not necessarily. Not everyone enjoys the process of getting their home to look, feel, and function great. In fact, going through the process could be what's stopping you from getting there! You'd much rather be reading, practicing an instrument, playing with the kids, or going to the movies in your free time. Recognizing and accepting that you don't have to take on your project alone could be the first step in getting it done. It's okay to seek help.

So why am I sharing all of this? Because I genuinely want everyone to have a home that looks, feels, and functions great. I don't want you to be stressed about getting there or left feeling stuck and unsatisfied.
