In some projects, the only way to get what you both need and want is to wipe the slate clean and start over. We have one of those projects, but not in this home. Here, we are carefully refinishing this kitchen dining without taking it down to the studs.
The space: Kitchen and dining room
The why: This family has enjoyed their beautiful custom home for over ten years now, and in that time, has come to realize that some of what the original homeowners installed doesn't suit their family's lifestyle or taste anymore. So they are ready to make thoughtful updates that will make the space feel refreshed and aligned to their style and needs but are also being very careful about maintaining the home's original design, a testament to their respect for the home's character.
We've carefully crafted a list of needs and wants to decide what is staying and going. What is staying are most of the custom cabinets and their stain, the appliances, the fireplace, and the pantry. What's going on is the small windows that flanked the fireplace to be replaced with larger ones, the peninsula will go away and be replaced with an island, and the built-ins are being removed to open the floorplan and to make space for a dry bar.
My favorite part of this project is working on blending the old and the new to make a space that will feel lighter and brighter but still appropriate to the home's character.
The punch list:
Remove the Kitchen peninsula and replace it with an island
Remove countertops and replace with quartz
Paint upper cabinets
New cabinet hardware
New plumbing fixtures
New recessed lights and wall lighting
Tiled backsplash
Remove built-in cabinets
Add in a dry bar
Frame out the fireplace in combination with keeping exposed brick
Built-in cabinets flanking the fireplace
Larger windows flanking the space
Paint walls, trim, and ceiling
Furnish to completion (including stool, dining table & chairs, rug, etc)
